DISCOVERING AN UNKNOWN FAMILY: My grandmother's book named Rachel Price and told of her birth in Pennsylvania and marriage to Wilson Martin in Morrow County, Ohio. Searching the 1870 Morrow County Census record in its entirety for Rachel Price and her husband Wilson Martin, I found a Wilson Price Jr. which looked like it could be her family. Many census records and a will later, I am certain that this was so and found Rachel, now known as Rachel Vastine Price, with her parents in Shamokin Township, Northumberland, Pennsylvania. Her death certificate had listed her birth in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, and there she was in the 1840 Census record. This lead to parents and two brothers for Wilson Price Jr. But by 1850, Rachel's parents and family were no longer in Shamokin Township. After much round about search I found them in Rush Township, Northumberland, Pennsylvania - next door to a family named Vastine. And Vastine was supposed to have been the "V." in Rachel Price's middle name. I spent some time looking into the old family of Vastine, but was never able to make a connection. And so my search ends in Shamokin Township Pennsylvania.
SPECIAL THANKS TO: Margaret May (Robertson) Martin for her Book for my Grandchildren which gave names, dates, and some early family stories, Donald William Martin and Frances Luella Picton Martin for their conversations about ancestors and creating the most treasured Picture Book of Martin Ancestors with exact dates and approximate places, Donald William Martin for his Tombstones of Ancestors Buried in Brown County, (Rachel) Kathleen Martin Beasley who told me that her grandmother's Rachel Price Martin's middle name was Vastine.
QUESTIONS: Who were the parents of Wilson Price Sr. and the parents of his wife Martha McKinley? Was there more of a connection with the family Vastine than that the Wilson Price Sr. family lived next door to them at one time? Could Wilson have possibly been simply a farm laborer on the Vastine farm?
